Cécile Franceus was born in Roosdaal, Belgium, in 1962. She lives and works at Zonnelied, an institute for mentally handicapped adults. Franceus’s works are produced from thousands of lines and loops; hardly any of the surface remains uncovered. She continues her writing and scratching until, at times, the pencil wears through the paper. She tears off loose pieces, sometimes sticking them on again, or pushing a new sheet underneath. She plays with the resistance and vulnerability of the material. Building up, tearing apart, sticking on, in order to renew again.
